Hello. I am

Nicolette de Waart

Dutch sculptor and designer Nicolette de Waart explores themes of connection, femininity, and beauty through a multidisciplinary practice that spans furniture, sculpture, and functional art objects. Her oeuvre is characterized by a cohesive and considered approach, wherein form, material, and meaning converge.

Rooted in a design language informed by nature, de Waart’s work is further shaped by her lived experiences across diverse cultural landscapes, including Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. She creates objects defined by bold simplicity and quiet elegance, often infused with a subtle sense of playfulness, reflecting an ongoing pursuit of the unfamiliar and the yet-to-be-discovered.

Research is integral to her creative methodology. The Berry lamps, for instance, draw inspiration from the refined craftsmanship and intricate aesthetics of traditional Japanese lanterns. Many of her most significant works emerge from processes of exploration and experimentation, realized through close collaborations with local artisans, including the foundry whose technical expertise informs her practice.

De Waart situates her work at the intersection of material mastery and contemporary inquiry, employing traditional techniques and materials such as bronze, wood, textiles, clay, and cire perdue (lost-wax casting). While grounded in heritage craftsmanship, her practice remains forward-looking, emphasizing innovation, sustainability, and circular modes of production.

Her work has been featured internationally at institutions and important art fairs including the Venice Design Bienniale, the Saatchi Gallery in London, Salone del Mobile in Milan, Collectible Brussels, and KunstRAI in the Netherlands.
