EXPLODED MIRROR
FABIAN BOLLIGER’S “EXPLODED MIRROR,” A 1.3-METER LARGE ROUND ARTWORK, SERVES AS A STRIKING COMMENTARY ON THE HUMAN CONDITION AND THE STATE OF MODERN SOCIETY. THE PIECE INVITES THE VIEWER TO ENGAGE WITH A DIFFERENT STAGE OF REALITY THROUGH A REFLECTIVE SURFACE THAT CAPTURES BOTH THE SELF AND A SURROUNDING SCENE SEEMINGLY IN THE MIDST OF AN EXPLOSION. THIS DUAL PERSPECTIVE PROMPTS AN INTROSPECTIVE JOURNEY, CHALLENGING US TO CONFRONT OUR OWN FRAGILITY AND VULNERABILITY WHILE QUESTIONING THE EXTERNAL CHAOS THAT DEFINES OUR WORLD.
AT THE HEART OF “EXPLODED MIRROR” LIES A MIRROR ENCASED IN A SUPER MATTE BLACK, HAND-BENT ALUMINUM SHEET, ITS SURFACE VIOLENTLY DISRUPTED BY AN EXPLOSIVE BLAST THAT CREATES A RAW, JAGGED HOLE. THE JUXTAPOSITION OF THE DARKENED MIRROR AND THE BRUTALIZED ALUMINUM EVOKES A SENSE OF DISSONANCE AND URGENCY. THE WOODEN EDGES, METICULOUSLY ADAPTED TO THE CONTOURS OF THE ALUMINUM, PROVIDE A STARK CONTRAST, ENHANCING THE PIECE’S ORGANIC YET DISJOINTED APPEARANCE.
