KITSÜ DESK
KITSU, A FUNCTIONAL ARTWORK BY JONATHAN JOUAN, DRAWS UPON THE RICH TAPESTRY OF JAPANESE FOLKLORE TO EXPLORE THEMES OF LOVE, TRANSFORMATION, AND THE BOUNDARIES BETWEEN WORLDS. INSPIRED BY THE ANCIENT LEGEND OF ONO AND THE FOX SPIRIT, KITSUNE, THIS PIECE SERVES AS A BRIDGE BETWEEN THE MYTHICAL AND THE MUNDANE, THE PAST AND THE PRESENT, THE INDIVIDUAL AND THE COLLECTIVE.
IN THE LEGEND, ONO’S LOVE FOR HIS ETHEREAL WIFE, WHO IS REVEALED TO BE A KITSUNE, A SHAPE-SHIFTING FOX SPIRIT, TRANSCENDS HER TRANSFORMATION AND DEPARTURE. EACH NIGHT, DESPITE HER TRUE NATURE, SHE RETURNS TO HIM, EMBODYING THE DUALITY OF SEPARATION AND UNION. JOUAN CHANNELS THIS NARRATIVE INTO KITSU, A UNIQUE PIECE OF ART FURNITURE THAT SIMILARLY EMBRACES DUALITIES—SERVING BOTH AS A SEPARATOR AND A UNIFIER, A PRIVATE SANCTUARY AND A COMMUNAL SPACE.

Jonathän Jouan’s work transcends the physical realm, aspiring to evoke intangible and spiritual encounters. His artistic pieces deeply connected to mythological stories, drawing from the ancient tales that once stirred his childhood imagination. In the present, he creates custom pieces that tell personal stories, forging a connection between the object and its owner.
Through his reinterpretation of folklore, nostalgic recollections, and timeless narratives, Jouan offers a glimpse into a world where art serves as both a mirror and a window into the human experience – rooted in the past, grounded in the present, and reaching towards an unseen future.
