The work

Dan Jula has a particular style; a mixture that sits between precise hand carving and the unpredictable process of burning the wood. For the artist, carving the wood reveals the powerful inner story hidden inside the wood; a usually tormented narative also underlined by the irreversibly and incontrollable burning process he apply to most of his works. There is a powerful contrast between the fine lines made the human manipulation and the irregularities made by the natural forces, in our case, pure energy – FIRE.

The build process

“I work in wood because wood, in its effective, organic materiality, offers a warmth, a personal experience of the material, but also for the characteristic of its easy and responsive conformation in processing. As a technique, carving gives me the opportunity to start from scratch with the material in a definitive gesture to reveal the content, in this way a parallel is made between the life that exists but must be processed, revived.” said the artist.

Each artwork is hand sculpted by the artist. Build process takes between 4-8 weeks; please allow extra time for custom orders (materials and dimensions can be customized upon request). No two pieces will be the same, because each piece is 100% unique. Due to the nature of the material, the coloring may vary slightly from the photos.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Dan Jula is making his one-of-a-kind sculptures, by directly cutting into the material. It is a brutal attack, but above all definitive, it leaves no room for error, any piece removed from the block is removed forever, this is in accordance with the psychic imbalances that can occur in a person’s life. He

uses art not only as a way of exposing his deeply creative thoughts, but also as a therapeutically tool of finding balance in his life. In truth, the artist’s psyche is deeply carved in the physical anatomy of his sculptures.
